P.G. Department of English: A Profile

S.G.G.S.Khalsa College, Mahilpur, a Multi Faculty, Post Graduate, Co-Educational College, is a premier Institution in the rural area of District Hoshiarpur. The Department of English is one of the few departments that came into existence in 1946, the year in which the College was established and since then, the Department has been rendering its services through its sincere and dedicated faculty. At present, the Dept. teaches English as a Compulsory as well as an Elective subject at the Under Graduate level. The Post Graduate programme was introduced in 2013-14 and since then, the Dept. has been running this course successfully. Apart from that, the Dept. makes its contribution to the courses offered by other departments.

Departmental Activities

 Literary Presentation Competition

A Literary Presentation Competition was organized by the English Literary Society on Sept. 07, 2016. Four teams consisting of the students of MA II participated in the competition and made their ppt presentations on four authors namely, Salman Rushdie, Toni Morrison, Doris Lessing & J.M. Coetzee, respectively. Prof. Pawandip Cheema, Head, P.G. Dept. of English, Dr. Kalwaran Singh, Dept. of English & Prof. Jang Bahadur Sekhon, Dept. of Punjabi were the judges for the competition.

Literary Poster Making Competition

The English Literary Society of the Post Graduate Department of English held a Literary Poster Making Competition on February 07, 2017. The competition aimed at providing the participants with an opportunity of giving a digital expression to their literary creativity by designing posters on various English authors. The event showcased 16 posters designed by them on  William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth, John Keats, G.B. Shaw, Virginia Woolf, the Bronte Sisters, Rabindra Nath Tagore, R.K. Narayan, Mulk Raj Anand, Arundhati Roy, Amitav Ghosh, William Golding, Alice Munro, J.M. Coetzee, Herta Muller and Ted Hughes & Sylvia Plath.

Extension Lecture on “Feminism & Literature”

On March 02, 2017, an Extension Lecture on “Feminism & Literature” was organized by the Department in the Convention Hall. Dr. Praveen Sharda, Professor, USOL, Panjab University, Chandigarh delivered the Lecture.

Guest Lecture on “New Teaching Techniques & Strategies

 On July 21, 2017, a Guest  Lecture on New Teaching Techniques & Strategies was organized by the Department for the college teachers. Prof. R.S. Salaria, an eminent author, motivational speaker and former Head, Dept. of Computer Sci. & Engineering, Thapar Univ., Patiala delivered the Lecture. He focused on effective teaching as an important factor in holistic teaching and shared his views about teacher’s role in motivating the learners through his own personality, effective communication skills & positive thinking.

Literary Text Analysis Competition   

      A Literary Text Analysis Competition was organised by the Department of English on 4th April, 2019. Critical analyses of three masterpieces of postmodern fiction entitled ‘The Golden Notebook’ by Doris Lessing, ‘A Clockwork Orange’ by Anthony Burgess, and ‘Wide Sargasso Sea’ by Jean Rhys were presented by three teams consisting of students of M.A. II (English) Prof. Pawandip Cheema, Head of the PG Dept. of English, Prof. Jang Bahadur Sekhon, Asst. Prof.  in Punjabi and Dr. Dheeraj Sharma, Principal, SBHMS College of Education, Mahilpur were the judges for the event. The group with their analysis of ‘Wide Sargasso Sea’ stood first, the other with ‘A Clockwork Orange’ stood second, and the group analyzing ‘the Golden Notebook’ stood third in the competition.

Visit to the Hoshiarpur Writers’ Fest

The Staff and Students of the Department visited the Hoshiarpur Writers’ Fest held on November 23, 2019 at Citrus County, Chhauni Kalan, Hoshiarpur.
